History of Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence
In 2008, Tammy Phipps, President and CEO, developed and launched the first and only comprehensive driving program within the Department of Defense at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Her groundbreaking work provided a vital pathway to independence for many service members with severe injuries.
One of Tammy’s most notable success stories is that of Josh, a Marine who sustained life-altering injuries from an improvised explosive device (IED) during Operation Enduring Freedom. The injuries resulted in quadriplegia, paralyzing him from the chest down. Despite years of rehabilitation, Josh found himself facing a significant challenge: the prospect of driving again. Although numerous therapists affirmed his ability to drive, none were able to guide him through the process of regaining his independence behind the wheel.
Everything changed when Josh met Major Tammy Phipps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Tammy conducted a thorough assessment of Josh’s unique needs and devised a comprehensive plan to help him achieve his driving goals. She provided invaluable support, guiding Josh and his family through every step of the process. From recommending an appropriate vehicle and identifying the necessary adaptive equipment to coordinating vehicle modifications, providing follow-up training, and handling complex paperwork, Tammy’s unwavering dedication made all the difference. Thanks to her expertise and commitment, Josh was able to regain his independence and is now able to drive wherever he wishes.
Josh’s success story is just one of many. Over the years, Tammy has empowered hundreds of severely injured service members to reclaim their independence through mobility solutions tailored to their specific needs. Inspired by her vision and recognizing the widespread need for such support, Josh realized that countless others faced similar challenges and could benefit from specialized assistance.
In 2016, Tammy and Josh co-founded Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence, LLC, with a mission to make mobility accessible to everyone. Their goal is to serve not only Wounded Warriors but also individuals with adaptive mobility needs, providing them with the tools and resources to achieve independence and improve their quality of life.
